TWO SCHOOLS, ONE ALLIANCE · BELLATERRA (BARCELONA) – KILIFI (KENYA)

A whole year to get there.
Two weeks to transform.

Every June, right after university entrance exams, Year 13 students travel to Shariani and take over from those who came before. Three editions, an evolving school, and an entire community rallying throughout the year. Two weeks of mutual learning, genuine connection, and enduring improvements.

01· The starting point

Learning in conditions that make it possible.

Main building of Shariani Primary School in Kilifi County

In Kilifi, on the Kenyan coast, more than 1,200 pupils attend Shariani Primary School in a community marked by economic hardship. The school has a deeply dedicated teaching staff, but requires essential improvements in its facilities to guarantee a suitable, safe learning environment.

02· The model

An alliance that makes change possible.

On-the-ground collaboration with local organizations

We connect Barcelona and Kenya to turn the school's needs into tangible actions. We do this in collaboration with Fundació Montblanc from Barcelona, and with Volunteer Connect Kenya Foundation on the ground. We work collaboratively so every initiative addresses the real needs of the school community.

03· Continuity

A commitment that continues year after year.

Evolution and continuity of improvements at Shariani

Since 2024, we return to Shariani every June to give continuity to the project and move forward with improvements agreed with the school. This is not a one-off effort, but a shared journey that grows year after year to leave a lasting impact on the educational community.

At Shariani, every year leaves a lasting mark.

We return to Shariani every June to drive improvements at the school and contribute to the well-being of the students. Each initiative responds to real needs and provides continuity to our commitment to the educational community.

VOICES FROM THE PROJECT

Those who live it
tell it best.

Three editions, one shared conviction: education transforms when people are willing to truly commit.

“You go to Shariani thinking you are going to help, and you come back knowing you received far more than you gave. Seeing the children learning at the desks we built together —knowing they will still be there years from now— is the best reward you could imagine.”

“When the girls from La Vall arrive, our pupils understand that the world is much bigger than they imagined —and that someone from very far away spent an entire school year working hard just to reach them. That means more than any materials they bring.”

“What surprises me every year is the transformation of the students. They leave with a sense of responsibility and return with a changed outlook on life. Shariani is not an end-of-year trip: it is the project that defines their time at La Vall.”
